It's ok to mix your seasons. In fact some seasonal change overs look pretty good when you overlap them. The year I did the evergreens mixed with the pumpkins, I was preparing for my Christmas open house. It was always on the first Saturday in November, so the decorating had to begin in October. It was nice to pick my greens before it got too cold, and get them up with the lights in them...and they actually looked pretty good along with the orange of the pumpkins. If you are lucky enough to have have window boxes, you can still take advantage of using them long after the flowers have gone. It's one of my favorite ways to decorate the outside of a house for winter. If you don't have window boxes...but wish you did, they're pretty easy to add.

For my step, I just rounded up as many old plant pots as I could find and filled them with greens. It always looks better if you mix your greens for texture. I used fir boughs and mixed in some pine and cedar branches. I didn't have time that year...but you could add some pinecones, raffia, or any other decor that might look natural and still add some color. Be careful with using real berries. They don't last, and once they start to get soggy, they can stain your siding or deck.

If you are looking for a great centerpiece in the summer, and have flower beds...don't be afraid to cut some of you flowers and bring them inside to enjoy. I love these "snowball" flowers (not sure what they are really called...but that's what we call them). It is surprising how long some of these flowers will last. The ones pictures lasted a long time, then dried out, and still looked fabulous!

If you have kitchen cabinets with a space at the top...decorate away!!!! You can change things for each season, put up mini-lights in garland, make your display really full, or keep it as simple as you like. It's also a great place to protect some of your favorite decorations when you have small children. You still get to enjoy these collectibles, but don't have to worry about them getting broken. I think that my display also shows that you don't have to decorate the whole way around the cabinets. In this case, I just thought that if I did the whole space that it would be too much. When you have too much...nothing stands out, and some great pieces get "lost" in the clutter.

I like to put decorations with lights (lighted houses or electric candles) in places that are a bit dark...like the top of cupboards. It really adds a cozy feel, especially at night.

A large candle in a bowl makes a great centerpiece. In order to find a berry candle ring large enough, I used a wreath.

A ladder can be used for displaying old quilts (or new ones). This ladder was built out of an old bannister (we used the railing for the sides and the spindles for rungs) that was saved from an old house in our home town. The quilt hanging on it is one we received from one of our Uncles and Aunts for a wedding gift. You can also hang throws, homespun linens, or towels for your bathroom. I'm a quilt lover, so this is something I love to hang throws on as my collection grows. It is now in my bedroom, and can be seen in the "Tour our Home" pages.

If you have a large kitchen with high ceilings, you can use a pot rack to hang your pots and pans on. For people with smaller kitchens who still like the look of a pot rack, but just don't have the space for pots and pans...you can hang pretty much anything on it. I have my utensils (that I actually used) hanging in the front where they are easy to reach. In the back you can hang small baskets, some people hang all antique utensils on their pot rack. The berry garland dresses it up as well.

Use your imagination for different uses for your items. This "breadbox" made a great stand, while holding magazines and extra rolls of tp. If you put a small tree up in your house at Christmas, they always look great in a stoneware crock or a small wooden crate. I'm always a fan of lots of small lights like the one on the shelf. I find they really add a cozy feel to your home. This one also made a great "night light".

This picture was submitted by one of the Facebook members of the Country Lane Primitives page. Trudi shared the idea of using seasonally colored towels as decor (this is especially great for Fall). As you can see from all of the little fall accents she has added, it doesn't take much to have an impact (especially in a small room like a bathroom). This looks great!
